A new festival is about to stir up the still waters of summery Athens, enriching the city’s cinema scene with an important annual rendez-vous that is part of a global movement for the rights of persons with disability: ΕΜΟΤΙΟΝ PICTURES, offers the public the opportunity of getting to know new paths of artistic expression, common denominator of which is difference.

The
ΕΜΟΤΙΟΝ PICTURES Festival is an initiative of the Minister of State and Government Spokesman Mr Theodoros Rousopoulos and will be held from 16 to 18 June in the New Benaki Museum (138 Piraios St), as part of the 2nd International Conference “People with Disabilities and the Mass Media”, which is organized by the General Secretariat of Communication – General Secretariat of Information, on 18 and 19 June at the GSI Press Centre.

Of the 350 entries from 45 countries, 40 films will be screened, 32 of them in the Competitive Section and 8 in the Parallel Section. In the Competitive Section five prizes of 20,000 euros will be awarded by a Jury of distinguished Greek and foreign artists, such as award-winning director, author and screenwriter Jean-Marie Drot, the former director of the London Disability Film Festival Caglar Kimyoncu, composer Dimitris Papadimitriou, film director Antonis Rellas and the President of the Attica Cultural Society Eleni Moustaira. Information

The Festival, which is organized for the first time in Greece, has been warmly received by municipalities at home and abroad. The municipalities of Gaza (Palestine), Kauno (Angola), Novi Sad (Serbia), Timisoara (Romania) and Vancouver (Canada) have sent greetings, while 200 municipalities in Greece have expressed their desire to screen the festival’s award-winning films and the documentary made by pupils of the Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled of the Special Senior High School at Ilion, which emerged from the EMOTION PICTURES film workshop and will be screened at the Festival’s closing ceremony.

In addition to the members of the Jury, the Festival will honour eminent personalities in the field. The internationally renowned British artist Alison Lapper – with a significant volume of work inspired by the Venus de Milo – will inaugurate the events. Mark Quinn’s statue “Alison Lapper Pregnant” was set up in Trafalgar Square, in the heart of London. In 2003 Alison Lapper was named “Woman of the Year” in Spain. Her artworks have been exhibited in major museums and galleries, such as London’s Photographer’s Gallery and Fabrica.

The Festival will also honour Aimee Mullins, acclaimed athlete in the Paralympic Games, model, actress and icon of disabled people the world over. Aimee Mullins was named among the “Outstanding American Women of the 20th Century” by The Women’s Museum, for her services to athletics. As a student she competed against able-bodied athletes and in 1996 she took part in the Paralympic Games in Atlanta, setting world records in the 100 metres and the long jump. Rolling Stone magazine included her in its annual “hot list” and People magazine declared her one of  “The 50 Most Beautiful People in the World”, while fashion-designer Alexander McQueen  placed her on the catwalk. Although so young, Aimee Mullins has been a source of inspiration for several works of art, which are exhibited in some of the world’s premier museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Arts, Tate Modern and the Victoria & Albert. Aimee devotes her free time to non-profit organizations such as   Just One Break and the Women’s Sports Foundation.

EMOTION PICTURES is organized by the General Secretariat of Communication – General Secretariat of Information, in collaboration with the Greek Film Centre.
