EMOTION PICTURES Festival 2009

"Imagine all the people living life in peace", sang the St. Catherine's British School children's choir to the sounds of the piano played by 8 year-old Yoo Yee Eun from Korea who was born blind. A note of optimism that closed a particularly successful festival in the best possible way.

More than 5,000 people in the course of the four days of the Festival (19-22/6) had the opportunity to watch groundbreaking documentaries on the subject of disability from all over the world, to reflect, to be inspired, to exchange views and to acquire a different perspective not just as regards disability but also the broader social issues such as war, adverse working conditions, and the destruction of the environment.

Honoring the festival with their presence were distinguished international figures such as the Hellenic Minister of the Interior Prokopis Pavlopoulos, the President of the Greek National Committee of UNESCO Maria-Ekaterini Papachristopoulou-Tzitzikosta, the poet Kiki Dimoula, the composer Dimitris Papadimitriou, the Member of Parliament Maria Damanaki, the politician Nikos Konstantopoulos, the Deputy Director of the Benaki Museum Emilia Geroulanou, ambassadors, journalists, et al.

Theo Angelopoulos was president of the Festival Jury that gave out this year's awards. An honorary award was also given by the Greek Film Centre to Antonis Rellas, whose Waves of the Aegean was the Festival's closing film.

The Festival's Artistic Director Mary Hadjimichali-Papaliou promised even more surprises for next year's festival.
